As they were so unnerving and scary, it is your confidence that has been damaged by previous anxiety episodes. Once you fully understand you are not under any threat, then you can have a new response to the anxiety as it arises while speaking.

Defeating public speaking and panic attacks...

The key to controlling your fear of public speaking and panic attacks is that instead of pushing the emotional energy and excitement down into your stomach, you are moving out through it. Your body is in a slightly excited state, exactly as it should be while giving a speech, so release that energy in your self-expression. Push it out through your presentation not down into your stomach. You push it out by expressing yourself more forcefully. In this way you turn the anxiety to your advantage by using it to deliver a speech where you come across more alive, energetic and in the present moment. When you notice the anxiety drop as it does when you willingly move into it. Fire a quick thought off when you get a momentary break (as I am sure you have between pieces), asking it for “more.” You want more of its intense feelings as you are interested in them and are absolutely not threatened by them.

Learn more about public speaking and eliminating imminent panic attacks: <a href="http://wahm-info.com/public-speaking-and-panic-attacks/" target="_blank"rel="nofollow">Public Speaking and Panic Attacks

Extracted from an article by Joe Barry. We use the term "presentation" to include any important one-on-one meeting, small group discussions around a table, or speaking before an audience of thousands.

We are talking about a particular kind of fear. Some fear helps motivate you to divert time from the pounding surf of your daily schedule and prepare for your presentation. There comes a point for most of us, however, when the fear is no longer useful. It has crossed the line from excitement to dread. Instead of driving preparation, it now impairs concentration and kills energy.

Fear has a thousand faces, but we have only three basic responses:

Succinct Skills in Public Speaking

We’ve all heard that less is more, but not when applied to the frenetic, fact-filled culture of today. Today we are constantly bombarded with information, junk, information, junk information.

There’s little "free space" left – with advertising embedded on the shopping cart, popping up on the computer screen, scrolling across the TV, you name it. Feeling like there’s barely any space left in our minds, overburdened with unwanted information, we might feel like screaming, but it’s easier and less noticeable to flip the "off" switch. Not take in any more.

So working with today’s overburdened minds, how do you get an audience to turn on the "on" switch and get your own "very important" message across?

Looking Your Best

So that you can be sure of looking your best, especially important when speaking in public, I have started a new site for you to look at:

http://hubpages.com/hub/slim-down

Please let me know what you think of it. Your self-esteem is a powerful mantle and you don't want to lower it by exposing yourself to laughter or ridicule.

3. The audience knows nothing of your fears;
Audiences like this have seen many speakers before and are looking forward to hearing your speech. Because they are 'neutral' all you need to do is hide your nervousness and act the part of an accomplished speaker.

Do You Squidoo?

I've just discovered Squidoo. Remember being mystified by the tricks and illusions that you really thought were magic. Remember being told that all magicians were sworn to secrecy about how they performed their 'magic'?

Well with the internet it's easy now to find out exactly what they did and even learn how to do it for yourself.

You can imagine being in front of an astounded audience (who can't guess how you do it) and perform those same illusions that you have seen all the famous name magicians performing time and time again. Wouldn't that be great.

This is just one of my favourites that you can learn and repeat dozens of times:

Numerical Prediction

You produce a sealed envelope and announce that it contains a numerical prediction. Placing the envelope on the table for the moment, you hand a small piece of card and a pen to a spectator and ask them to write a number between 1 and 1000 on the card.

This done, the first spectator hands the card and the pen to another spectator and you invite them to do the same, writing their number below the first one. This is repeated with a third spectator before the pen and card are retrieved.

The card, pen and sealed envelope are handed to a fourth spectator who is asked to total the three numbers written on the card. When he's done this he opens the sealed envelope to find that your prediction matches the total of the three numbers.

All you need to do is make sure the people you involve are seated well apart and you have another identical card which you have already written numbers on. So you know that what he tells you does work. In fact he is classed as a "Titanium Powerseller" and this is the highest level.

John concentrates on selling e-books and in his challege he explains why this is a good business proposition and describes everything you need to do and the reasons behind why you need to do what he recommends. Obviously you need an Ebay account and a payPal account, but he also explains how you can make your email work like an autoresponder to deliver your digital goods once they are paid for. This one tip alone is worth hours of work saved.

More listing tips, such as aiming to end your auctions on a Sunday evening really do pay off and the way he gets repeat visitors coming back to buy again is a real eye-opener.

Overall I rate this e-book as excellent and you will learn a lot about how to make a good income in the same way that thousands already do just by following this guide.

Peter Fisher is an accomplished webmaster and publisher of www.ebookdownloads.biz and "trainee" ebay Powerseller. What I am going to do is give you these seven great tips for public speaking that work for me.

1. First of all, you must accept that you will be nervous, but you should also realise that you can overcome your nerves and go on to deliver a great speech. Public speaking nerves are natural and help you rise to the challenge – they're a form of stress response that heightens your senses and prepare you for the 'fight or flight' response.

2. Keep your mind on your speech topics by thinking to yourself: "I'm here to deliver some important information, I understand the message and my well-chosen words will get that message across".

3. Try to get to your room before anyone arrives. If you can become familiar with the layout and 'feel' of the room your speech will go better.

4. If you are using visual aids or other equipment practice operating it beforehand. You will relax more if you don't have to try to remember how the things work. Being seen as a confident public speaker is partly about being able to operate the equipment!

5. Public speaking gets easier with practice. So practice your speech out loud, especially the opening and closing remarks. Keep practising until you feel that the flow of your words sounds natural and you are used to the sound of your own voice.

6. Some light exercise before you speak will burn off the stress. Do some stress-burning exercises before you speak. Massage your neck, shoulders, lower back, temples, or anywhere else you feel the physical signs of tension.

7. When your turn comes, walk confidently to the front of the room, think about your message and move with confident body language, then glance around and try to catch the eye of one or two people – you'll be surprised how this gets their attention and starts to quieten the room.

Read more public speaking tips...

Overcome Your Public Speaking Nerves

Many of us would rather die than stand up to speak in public. You know the feeling don't you? The sweaty palms; the dry mouth and red face; the total lack of rational thought only replaced by absolute PANIC.

OK maybe a little exaggerated, but I've been there myself and I've seen otherwise strong people reduced to gibbering wrecks at the thought of having to do this.

Now I've also been on one or two public speaking courses - the last one was run by an actor, sorry an AC-TOR, a real thesp and we spent a lot of time breathing(?) and talking in strange accents! I'm not sure how much it helped, but the day was fun, so perhaps it did do some good.

What I'm going to suggest though rather than going to one of those public speaking courses that may or may not help is to follow some simple guidelines and then read and practice my suggestions.

First off try to be sure that your part in whatever public speaking engagement you are involved with is brief. This means you know your agony will be short and there will be less time for the audience to get their aim (ha-ha).

Prepare your speech carefully, writing it out in full. Two sides of A4 in normal handwriting will take about three minutes to read. Read it out loud in front of a mirror several times until you start to feel whether it sounds about right. If you find yourself changing the words as you read it out, then change them on the paper copy. Only when it feels right and sounds natural should you continue.

Continue reading it out loud in front of the mirror, but try to refer to the paper less often; you will find this gets easier after several readings. When you can run through the whole thing without referring to the written version you're almost there.

Next get the paper typed up so that you can refer to it as necessary. Break it up into paragraphs so you can pick up the point you are at easily if needed.

When you get to your engagement have your paper handy, take a deep breath then stand up. wait for the audience to settle, look around the room and smile at someone you know or just anyone.

Start without referring to your paper, confident that it is in your pocket if you should need it.

For more public speaking courses to overcome your nerves visit my Public Speaking website.

Peter Fisher is Managing Director of Career Consulting Limited which provides expert help for career and performance management. See where you fit
into the wide spectrum of our definition of nice behaviour.
To see better how being assertive fits in with communication go to Assertiveness in Communication

Below is a list of some of the things that adaptive people do.
It will help you identify for yourself the areas where you find
it difficult to be anything but accommodating and the areas
where you feel you are in balance and have a say in the outcome
of the transaction.

This is a chance for you to self-assess the degree to which you
modify your natural inclinations and to identify some of the
feelings you get when you do modify your behaviour when you
don't want to. We can't stress forcefully enough that none of
the behaviours listed below are right or wrong. Only if you
recognise it as a liability is it one.

For instance, avoiding conflict at any cost might be perfectly
all right for some people and never cause them any problems at
all. While for others, avoiding conflict means they never get to
disagree, never get to stand up for themselves, never have the
experience of achieving a successful conclusion to a
confrontation and then they end up feeling bad.

We are often too hasty to put a judgement on our actions: this
is good or that is bad. If you personally identify something as
a problem then it is a problem for you. It may not be a problem
for someone else. Therefore, to declare that all overly nice
behaviour is wrong would be a mistake on our part.

This quiz is for you to determine where you have difficulties
and what you can do to alleviate them. It is not to make a whole
new set of rules about the correct way to run your lives!

To answer our self-assessment questions go to: How nice are you?

Speaking In Public to Boost Your Career and Your Salary

Public speaking can be very satisfying. Apart from the ability to boost your career and your salary, it is a source of self-actualisation and of building both confidence and self-esteem.

The more confidence you develop, the more your career develops.

When I first started speaking in public, I absolutely hated it! The first time was without warning, I was put on the spot without any kind of preparation; made far worse because I hadn't expected it.

After maybe the second or third time I was asked to speak in public I began to enjoy it; being able to communicate ideas to a group or even influence that group is a powerful feeling. When people accept you and your ideas as a public speaker, it has a measurable impact on your feelings of achievement and as you build your public speaking confidence you can also measure the impact on your career finances as your salary goes up.

As you develop your public speaking skills, you find that people ask for your views more often, you become more visible to decision-makers in your organization and you know how this can be massively important to your career. It can boost the apparent authority you have, especially when you are requested by senior, influential people.

If you want to advance your career and hence give your career finances a boost, you could do no better than by speaking in public and immediately brushing up your public speaking skills. Volunteering to give a speech or lead a session in a seminar will always be gratefully accepted by organisers.

Perhaps you have tried it before and didn't enjoy it? There are a number of simple techniques to help you which do not take too much to master. You should try The Ten Habits of Highly Effective Speakers to see what I mean.

Many people think that the greatest measure of success is discerned by how long you have been in your job or what level of qualifications you hold. However research has shown that people who give more speeches tend to command higher salaries than those who give fewer or no speeches.

In some of the, lets say more 'practical' roles, such as engineer, the value of being able to give powerful presentations is often underestimated, yet notice how the one who can give a good speech, perhaps communicating some complex idea to laymen, is often the one who gets the promotion and the boost to their career finances.

In other jobs, say a client-facing role, you know you will have to give speeches so you better do what you can to be the best at them.

Whatever your role in employment or even in life, there will be instances when you simply have to talk in public. If you have opinions of any kind, the day will come when you have to speak to defend them or inform others publicly.

Peter Fisher is an expert Author and Publisher of <a href="http://www.public-speaking-courses.com"target="_blank">Public Speaking Courses where you can get as much free help as you need whatever the time of day or night.

Technorati Profile

Where to Start Public Speaking

For your very first public speaking exercise, try to be sure that your part in the public speaking engagement is relatively brief. This means that you know your agony will be short-lived and there will be less time for the audience to get their aim in (ha-ha).

Start by preparing your speech carefully; writing it out in full is always the best way to start.

Continue reading it out loud in front of the mirror, several times, but try to refer to the paper less often; you will find this gets easier after several readings.

For more public speaking courses to overcome your nerves visit my Public Speaking Courses website.

Peter Fisher is Managing Director of Career Consulting Limited which provides expert help for career and performance management. It can be done - and you can come to enjoy public speaking.

There will be more in my next blog soon...
